Powerline Networks Interfere With Spooks?

An anonymous reader writes "Powerline technology which ships network data over mains cables could be causing interference for spies, according to a letter from the UK's top secret listening station, GCHQ. However, the British regulator says that objections to powerline all come from radio amateurs — and a Google search reveals that the writer of the letter (which GCHQ seems to be disowning) comes from a ham."

CyanogenMod 7.0 now stable, released for over 30 Android devices

It's official, folks! CyanogenMod 7 is now deemed stable enough to be called, well, stable. The ROM is available now for your flashing pleasure on over 30 devices -- including some tablets. Don't worry, it doesn't disappoint; I've been using it through the development process for months and it's well worth the wait.

If you haven't been following the updates on its progress, here's a quick recap: It's based on Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread, it's got built-in root access with all the command-line goodies, Apps2SD capability (built-in), Incognito Mode for the Android Browser, built-in CPU frequency adjustment and scaling (including overclock and choice of governor), loads of UI improvements and interface tweaks, OpenVPN and SIP calling settings, USB/WiFi/Bluetooth tethering, FLAC support, an FM Radio player, and loads of other features and enhancements.

It's even got a one-click UI theme-switcher that T-Mobile helped develop (open-source, no less).

Even if you aren't into flashing custom ROMs on your expensive new smartphone, you have to admit that this release is a pretty great thing... After all, it means a fully-functional version of Android 2.3.3 is now running, with loads of bells and whistles, on about 30 devices whose manufacturers and carriers are simply too lazy to update.

AppleCrate II: Apple II-Based Parallel Computer

sproketboy noted that many years ago Michael J. Mahon built the AppleCrate — a parallel stack of Apple IIs — for no good reason. Recently he came back with the AppleCrate II, which more than doubles the number of motherboards, and at least triples the awesomeness.

Xperia Play shipment to New Zealand stolen, Vodafone launch delayed

As if Sony Ericsson hasn't already had enough headaches with the Xperia Play, here comes Vodafone New Zealand with the announcement that its launch shipment of the gamer-friendly smartphone has been... stolen! We don't know how many Xperia Plays were in those crates, but it must take a pretty sophisticated operation to snatch up all of Voda's supply for an entire country. This slight hitch in transportation follows an unexplained delay in shipments reaching the UK last month, and will compound shortages already caused by limited production capacity in Japan. Man, imagine how terrible this news might have been if the Play actually had any games worth playing.

Opera 11.10 includes improved power saving features

Just recently, the Opera 11.10 release candidate was made available for download. It brought a handful of important feature additions -- like HTML5 File API support and IMAP enhancements -- and loads of bugfixes. Nestled in amongst the other details in the Opera team's announcement is one more interesting tidbit: Opera 11.10 offers improved battery optimizations.

The timing here is certainly interesting, what with Microsoft's recent report on how much power the top five Web browsers consume. In its findings, Opera 11 was fairly low in the standings. While we've not seen any new benchmarks yet, we're curious to know whether the Opera 11.10 RC offers any significant gains.

Auslogics Disk Defrag 3.2 gets smarter, faster

Auslogics Disk Defrag has been part of my system maintenance toolkit for quite some time. With the release of version 3.2, it's now even better at tidying up and optimizing your system's hard disk drives. In addition to a cleaner, easier-to-use interface, Disk Defrag 3.2 offers improved single file and folder defragging, better processing of multiple disks, a simplified scheduling screen, and more informative tool tips. Auslogics has also fine-tuned the program's defragmentation and file consolidation algorithms.

For laptop users, there's a new option to lock the program if your system is running on battery power -- so scheduled operations don't kick in and drain your power source at an inopportune moment. If you happen to have an SSD installed in your PC, you can head to the Disk Defrag options and exclude it from scanning (many think that defragmenting an SSD is a very bad idea).

Samsung's 11.6-inch Series 9 now shipping in the US, priced at $1,160

It's been about a month since Samsung's 11.6-inch Series 9 laptop first surfaced for pre-order on Amazon, and now it's finally available for shipping. Touting a $1,160 price tag, this duralumin-enclosed little beast packs an Intel Core i3-380UM processor, 2GB of RAM and a 64GB SSD. The 2.3-pounder also ships with 802.11b/g/n wireless, Bluetooth 3.0 and WIMAX 4G capabilities, along with a 1.3-megapixel HD webcam and a 1366 x 768 display with 340 nits of brightness. The newest addition to the Series 9 family is available on Amazon, Circuit City and Tiger Direct, but if they don't suit your fancy, you can check with Samsung to find a full list of retailers, below.

Samsung's free Explore 3D VOD service lands for British Smart TV owners

Americans eager to get their eyes on Samsung's 3D video on demand service are just going to have keep waiting, but our friends across the pond can break out their active shutter glasses and Santana Champ because Explore 3D has arrived in the UK. While the rest of us are stuck shelling out for Blu-rays and premium cable subscriptions for the luxury of watching videos in all their three-dimensional glory, Samsung Smart TV owners in Britain can now fire up movies, music videos, trailers and other clips for free. The company promised the service would be coming to the US and Europe shortly after its Korean launch in March and plans to expand its library of free titles to over 70 by the end of 2011. Moom for Mac simplifies window moving and zooming

Moom is a Mac utility that aims to simplify the task of moving and sizing windows. Moom can run in three different modes, seen in the image above. The Standard mode will make Moom have a Dock icon as well as menu items in the menu bar. In Menu Bar mode, Moom will only show up in your menu bar, and in the Faceless mode you won't see any sign of its existence at all -- unless you hover over the green zoom button in any window, which is when Moom starts working its magic.

Moom has two ways in which it can be operated -- by using the mouse or the keyboard. Using the mouse, after you've hovered over the aforementioned green zoom icon, a Moom menu will pop-up (above left). From there you can select if you want the current window zoomed to full screen, or if it should only occupy the left or right half of the screen, or even the top or bottom half if you're feeling saucy. The arrow-like icon allows you to revert the window to its original position.

But wait, there's more! If you drag the width/height icons a few pixels instead of just clicking on them, they're transformed into even more options, allowing you to zoom the current window to a(ny) quarter of the screen. How exactly does this work? To make the window occupy the top left quarter, you drag the 'left half' icon up, and to assign it to the bottom left quarter, you drag the 'left half' icon down.

Keyboard mode lets you control Moom with a global hotkey and the arrow buttons. You can set any key combination to be your global Moom hotkey, and set any subsequent key press to do any action that Moom can accomplish. Using the keyboard also gives you the option of centering a window, something which can't yet be done with the mouse. Last, but definitely not least, you can rest assured knowing that Moom does support multiple displays.

Moom works for 100 uses in its free demo mode, after which you can purchase it either directly from Many Tricks (the developer), or from the Mac App Store. The license costs $5.
